In this thorough revision of a text on inorganic chemistry, the authors have again used a twin-track strategy designed to enable students to gain an adequate grasp of the subject without being overwhelmed by the amount of material. The book provides a broad overview of the subject, offering a framework on which to build deeper understanding. It also looks at selected areas in more depth with the aim of providing the student with the confidence to approach other topics at the same level of detail. A systematic survey of the chemistry of the elements follows the periodic-table arrangement and concentrates on compounds with oxygen and the halogens. These sections have been updated and expanded to reflect current understanding and theories. There are new sections on fullerenes and related species, co-ordinated dihydrogen and actinide organometallic chemistry, and an expanded section on cluster compounds. The survey of silicate structures has been expanded and is now treated as a special topic to reflect the industrial importance of zeolites. Yet another new chapter covers selected topics in biological and environmental inorganic chemistry.
